i have 15 years’ worth of outstanding library fines in three separate cities and it’s my hope that eventually a bounty hunter librarian will come to collect and we’ll get in a bar fight and fall in love

I also can’t rent movies in two different towns so there’s that.

I’m newly terrified by the implication that librarians aren’t people and I’ve misjudged what exactly I’m up against

Assholes are gonna asshole, but activists are gonna activist

or, On reacting to injustice with just “This is America”

“This is America” has become a common reaction to the policies and actions of the Trump administration. But that phrase comes with the defeatist implication “This is how America really is and always will be: bad. (So give up fighting injustice).” But hope is integral to the long road ahead. Hope matters.

It’s possible to be aware of injustice, then and now, without implying we all have nothing to offer but bigotry. Because there have been people fighting injustice as long as it has existed. Right now, there are countless people in this country fighting on every issue imaginable.

Many of them only came to realize they can and should make their voice heard when Trump was elected. Their activism still matters; better late than never. The fact that people are resisting and fighting matters. We are not letting injustices happen without a fight. That matters.

So I don’t endorse it when people say this is just America. Because assholes are gonna asshole, but activists are gonna activist. And people who don’t consider themselves activists are also gonna fight, and it’s been that way for a long time. Condemning the past and present as a lost cause is not an effective tactic.

Why do people want to live in the sad little world where STEM is the only thing worth doing, anyway?  Is your ideal society a battleship with no windows because seeing outside is a needless luxury?  Is your personal mascot a worker ant?  Do you read 1984 and sigh wistfully, then throw the book away in rage because reading fiction is not Productive and writers are not Productive People?

or are you big ‘ol hypocrites who actually enjoy the fruits of art and design and liberal arts every day, but you just don’t want to admit it because then you won’t feel special for knowing how to slap together three lines of javascript

Y’know… very, very few of the people actually in STEM that I know are like this. Most of the people I’ve met who are like this do, like, office work or something, and just idolize STEM. But also frequently are not in favor of giving grants to STEM projects.

Why Do Transgender People Need Passports?

1) For those who can’t afford or don’t want surgery: in many states the passport is the best (and sometimes only) way to have ID that accurately reflects their gender.

2) Passports count as two forms of identification: they are weighted more heavily than a license. You can use a passport as ID in place of a birth certificate in many cases, which in many states can be very difficult to change your gender on. They are good for 10 years from the date of issue.

3) Currently you need only a doctor’s note to change your gender on a passport. Not even a name change is necessary. You absolutely don’t need surgery: this is a rule established by the outgoing administration’s state department and can be changed easily by the new appointee. No voting, just gone.

4) You can get a passport with your current legal name and get it changed (within a year) for free: once your name change is official, you can apply to have your passport corrected. The state department has a form that you can use to get the replacement fee waived as long as you’re within that one year window.
