TIL of “Fan Death”, a well known myth in South Korean culture, that running an electric fan in a closed room with unopened or no windows can lead to death. Despite no concrete evidence to support the concept, fan death persists due to its popularity as an urban myth or superstition.

via ift.tt

Fan death is real, and by real I mean people die of heat stroke while running a fan in closed quarters (which doesn’t objectively help) and the death gets mistakenly attributed to the fan.

Well, the point where fans stop helping and instead become counterproductive is around 98°F.

I think it has to be higher than that because humans sweat, and being blown on results in evaporative cooling. At *some* point it’ll stop working, but unless you also have 100% humidity, it has to be higher than the body temperature.

HELP NEEDED!!

Majakka, our queer and trans commune ,
is in need of help. Due to a medical emergency with one of the tenants, we are lacking in funds to pay the whole rent. Some of us are running from abusive parents, and if the rent is not made, it’s entirely possible that trans and queer people will go homeless or have to return to abusive parents.

Right now, there is another pressing matter on top of our concerns with rent. We have promised to help a trans person of colour who lives in another country in Europe get housing in our commune, and they have been preparing to leave their extremely conservative household for a while now. Due to some things that are too personal to share in a public space, their situation just got far more dire. They have literally no money and need to book a flight to Finland before the end of this month.

Please help us both make rent and fly our dear friend to safety. For the rent we’re missing on roughly the 300€ each month, and for the ticket we would probably need at least another 150€ due to the high cost of tickets even within Europe during the summer.

Thank you for your time ❤

*PLEASE READ/SIGNAL BOOST*

Monday, July 16th.

My previous, benefit sanction post (please click to read about my situation)

Hi everyone, I’m Gemma and I desperately need your help. I know that you are all tired of seeing these posts as I am of making them, but I honestly have no other choice.

Above, is a photo of my bank acct today in the negative due to overdue bills and charges from previous months and I have tried very hard to try and pay it off without success due to my welfare benefits being revoked under the UK’s controversial changes to how benefits are assessed and assigned and due to my mental illnesses. My appeal against this decision was recently denied and with no idea of when my sanction will be lifted it has caused me to struggle with my bill payments and to get groceries/household supplies with absolutely no income and I’ve been drowning in debt because of it, I can’t even afford to to eat.

Not being able to eat is now a constant thing for me, as I have regularly skipped on eating for the past few weeks in a row now to try and somehow make ends meet and it has taken such a toll on me that a few days ago I was diagnosed with a folic acid deficiency, due to lack of nutrition. I have been prescribed medication to help but with this overdrawn balance I can’t afford anything, all including my rent due at the end of the month and a missed payment could result in eviction.

If anyone could spare any amount to help me, even if it’s just £1/$1/€1, it would literally save my life and, sharing definitely helps just as much as donations. Nobody has to donate if they can’t or don’t want to, I know we’re all struggling. Thank you for your help 💖

Why Are Bird Eggs Egg-Shaped?

elodieunderglass:

femmenietzsche:

Researchers have argued that pointy eggs are common to cliff-nesting
birds because they roll in a circle and are less likely to tumble off an
edge. Or that asymmetric eggs pack together more easily and would allow
females with large clutches to incubate their broods efficiently. Or
that spherical eggs are stronger and less prone to breaking, or use the
least amount of shell for a given volume, which would be useful for
birds that can’t get enough calcium in their diet.

“There are a
lot of hypotheses, but no conclusive explanation or theory,” says
Stoddard, who’s an evolutionary biologist based at Princeton University.
“It was a good puzzle.”

To solve it, Stoddard teamed up with L. Mahadevan,
a biophysicist at Harvard University who has studied “how leaves
ripple, how tendrils coil, and how the brain folds, among other things.”
He realized that all eggs could be described according to two simple
characteristics—how asymmetric they are, and how elliptical they are.
Measure these traits, and you can plot every bird egg on a simple graph.
They did that for the eggs of 1,400 bird species, whose measurements
Stoddard extracted from almost 50,000 photos. It was the resulting graph
that revealed the left-field nature of chicken eggs.

Pretty interesting, actually

Can I just share this graph from the original paper:

this is a truly excellent frog, he’s going places and he doesn’t care how long it takes. 12/10 for realism.

this frog looks like he’s having a cheeky little giggle at you for being in the bathroom for so long. something about him unsettles me. 2/10

this is the woodchime frog. he watches you smugly. i don’t like how he’s watching me, 5/10 because he’s kinda cute anyway

this fellow is perched right next to the toilet. one eye stares directly at your back, while the other looks at the wall. 6/10 good frog shape but still very unsettling
