Now, some of the earliest periodicals and newsletters, which shaped the perceptions of relevant issues for the LGBTQ community while providing news and information on meetings, demonstrations, events, entertainment and even LGBTQ-friendly businesses — have been digitized, preserved and made available in The Archives of Human Sexuality and Identity, the largest digital archive on LGBTQ history and culture. Developed and launched by Gale, a leading provider of resources for libraries and part of Cengage Learning,Part One: LGBTQ History and Culture since 1940 is now available, with two additional parts planned for the future.

While one highlight of the archive is the unparalleled collection of newsletters, newspapers, and periodicals by, for, and about gays and lesbians — including some from places as distant as Latvia and Zimbabwe — The Archives of Human Sexuality and Identity goes well beyond these periodicals. It brings together in digital form approximately 1.5 million pages of rare and unique content — including personal correspondence and interviews with numerous LGBTQ individuals, organizational papers, government documents, manuscripts, pamphlets and other types of primary sources. The Archive covers social, political, health and legal issues impacting LGBTQ communities around the world, including the gay rights movement and the HIV/AIDS crisis.

I’m literally crying this is so incredible

Oh my gosh!!!

As someone who has spent the last ten years working on digital libraries and digitization of rare and archive material, I hate that this is a for-profit venture that requires a subscription to access. I hate that some company has turned this community information and history into money for themselves. This should be the work of libraries, museums, and archives. Public institutions should be seeking these materials, and making them available themselves. Our history should not be commodified and sold. This archive should be a public archive, not a product.

Boozhoo (hello), my name is Ken, I am a disabled Ojibwe artist from northern Wisconsin. I am writing this post because I am having a hard time making ends meet and any donations I could possibly receive at this time would be greatly appreciated. Recent events have left my bank account depleted and my cupboards bare, I have some food but it will not last and I still do not know how I will cover all the utility bills.

I do have PayPal, that is really the best way to donate at this time, the email I use for that is: baapimakwa@gmail.com, or you can click here.

Really starting to worry as July comes to an end new bills are coming and I’m already in the hole due to multiple emergencies, including the family vehicle breaking down (it was replaced but with a $490 van that needs a lot of work), there is not enough food to last and we don’t even have the gas money to get to the foodshelf.

Canada is using ancestry DNA websites to help it deport people

In another example of the extraordinary lengths Canadian immigration officials go to deport failed refugee claimants, the Canada Border Services Agency has been collecting DNA from migrants and using ancestry websites to find and contact their distant relatives and establish their nationality.

“I think it is a matter of public interest that border service agencies like the CBSA are able to obtain access to DNA results from sites like Familytreedna.com and Ancestry.com,” said Subodh Bharati, a lawyer who is representing a man who says he’s Liberian, but who the government is now trying to prove is actually Nigerian. “There are clear privacy concerns. How is the CBSA able to access this information and what measures are being put in place to ensure this information remains confidential?”

Bharati, who is representing his client through CLASP, the legal aid clinic at Osgoode Hall Law School, said he is aware of at least two individuals who used Familytreedna.com, one in the UK, who have been contacted by the CBSA seeking to deport someone from Canada.

“Individuals using these sites to look at their family tree should be aware that their confidential information is being made available to the government and that border agents may contact them to help facilitate the deportation of migrants,” he said.

Wtf this is actually real?

Yes, this is real.

You know the world is burning when Canada stops being “the nice one”…

Canada has never been “the nice one”.

Maybe pay attention to the serious issues I’ve been posting on this blog for the past 4 years.

Stories like the above are not an anomaly. The CBSA and RCMP and CSIS is infamous for this stuff.

Maybe if you all paid attention to what Canadians are saying rather than only getting your Canadian news from international fluff stereotypical pieces that make us seem like some paradise, you wouldn’t be so shocked.

Than maybe, we could collectively work to fix these problems instead of just throwing hands and going ‘oh no Canada did a bad thing’.

Do you guys know why I’m so adamant about you vaccinating your kids?

I’m immunocomprimised. It means my immune system is weakened. I have very weak lungs and I rely on herd immunity to stay safe.

I’m allergic to the shot people get for whooping cough. How do I know? I had a 3 week, painful reaction. Now, this was a while ago, before shit hit the fan with the whole anti-vax movement.

But do you know what my doctor told me? It was safer for me to get the shot that I’m ALLERGIC TO than rely on herd immunity because if I get the shot, I’ll be in moderate-severe pain for about 3 weeks max. If I get the disease, I will die. My lung capacity is bad enough, but my body is too weak to fight the disease.

So not only are you putting your child’s life at risk by not vaccinating them, you’re putting mine and all the other people who cannot be vaccinated at risk because of a selfish decision that isn’t backed by science.

god THIS. vaccinate your kids and vaccinate yourself too. my dad is also immunocompromised and relies on herd immunity. neither he nor anyone who lives with us can get live-virus vaccines (we can only get ones where the virus is inert/dead) because if he’s exposed to the weakened virus he will contract whatever disease it is, so herd immunity is SUPER important for everyone in our family.

the anti-vax bullshit HURTS people. my dad has been hospitalized before just from a common flu because people he knew didn’t get their flu shots, came in to work with the flu, and got him sick. even with my dad’s healthy lifestyle, the fact that he’s immunocompromised from leukemia means even a really common and easily treatable disease (the flu, bronchitis, whooping cough) could straight up kill him.

fuckin. vaccinate.

Also do you know how many people in the community are immunocompromised?

  • Every cancer patient
  • Every pregnant person
  • Just about every elderly person
  • All small children
  • Many people with invisible illnesses, such as autoimmune conditions, AIDs, congenital immune deficiencies, malabsorption issues etc
  • Heck, even those with jetlag or under severe stress are immunocompromised

In short, YOU KNOW LOTS OF IMMUNOCOMPROMISED PEOPLE. Unless you are a hermit, YOU INTERACT WITH IMMUNOCOMPROMISED PEOPLE ON A DAILY BASIS. GET VACCINATED!!!!

Autistic children are not infants.

Autistic teens are not toddlers.

Autistic adults are not children.

Your 23 year-old autistic cousin does not have “the mind of a 7 year-old.”

Stop calling autistic men “buddy.” Stop calling autistic women “sweetie.”

Don’t act like it’s a crime to swear in front of an autistic adult.

Don’t assume that because someone is nonverbal, they can’t understand what is going on. ESPECIALLY don’t assume that they can’t communicate at all.

Stop infantilizing autistic people.

This is important. I once went to a group meet up for autistic adults with a friend. It was a game night for adults only at a local college. Since it was a game night I brought a bunch of games with me, most notably Cards Against Humanity.

The game we all decided to play was cards against humanity and we all had a lot of fun. The one issue was the person “overseeing” the meeting, didn’t like how adult the game was and didn’t like how we were all making “inappropriate” jokes. Right before I left I asked everyone what they thought of Cards Against Humanity, and everyone of the autistic people in the room all said it was a lot of fun and they really wanted to play it again. I never went back to that meeting at first due to issues attending, but my friend went to the game night the next month and was told that “Cards against humanity is now banned for being to crass”.

After hearing that I decided not to go back to any of those meetings since there is nothing wrong with a group of adults having fun and playing CAH. To be told we could not play that game because it wasn’t PG was BS. It was a group of adults. I had had to show i was an adult to attend. It felt like the message was that because it was a group of autistic people we couldn’t play a game that was a lot of fun.

I have a fucking file in my developmental disability agency saying I have a crass sense of humor.  It repeats this several times.  Not that this is news to me, but what is this doing written at least three times in a file that is supposed to be there in case of medical emergency?  It also says that you can tell I’m pissed because I type harder on my keyboard.  Then it gives instructions as to how to manipulate me into not being pissed.  Manipulating me is actually the fastest way to piss me off… but these people are fucking terrified of normal human emotion of any kind displayed without hiding it, so…
