For much of the last century, the tiger’s future hasn’t been so bright: in their native Asian habitats, tigers face poaching, unchecked deforestation, increased human encroachment and disappearing prey. But recent national and international programs have helped the species find some footing. In 2010, 13 Asian nations that are home to tigers, including India, joined together in the Global Tiger Recovery Program, pledging to double the global tiger populationby 2022 — the next Year of the Tiger per the Chinese horoscope. The group also decided to annually mark July 29 as Global Tiger Day.
India’s track record with tiger populations has been encouraging. Numbers have steadily risen in census reports since 2006 with the 2014 survey finding an estimated 2,226 wild tigers across the country. The 2018 All India Tiger Estimation is currently underway and is said to be the world’s largest wildlife survey in terms of “coverage, intensity of sampling and quantum of camera trapping.”
The striped cat has been a part of India’s culture for as long as anyone can remember. The warrior goddess Durga is often depicted riding one. Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book, cast the tiger as the villain in his famous collection of stories, perhaps inspired by the creatures that roamed his birthplace of Mumbai (then called Bombay) in the 18th and 19th centuries. Kings across India hunted the tiger for its prized coat and bragging rights.
Something that i’ve seen happening in my notifications this week is a new kind of porn blog interacting with my posts, and i want to explain WHY its so important to block them.
In the past all that would happen if a porn blog would follow you is just that, they’d follow you. It was all to do with google algorithyms where if a porn blog was shown as ‘linked’ or following a legitimate site/blog then it increased the place they came in the google searches. Great if you are one of those scam websites that gets people to click on links that either plant malware or are just shady as fuck. Porn blogs were also sometimes shut down without warning so all the scammers hard work was over and gone. Good for us, not good for them. Most of these blogs were just stolen gifs/videos from other porn blogs anyway. If you thought gif stealing was bad/rife in the geek/nerd fandoms, just have a peep at the porn blogs.
Well a lot of the search engines etc caught onto this and built controls into their software, so they found a new way of getting (or at least trying to get) people to click on links to take them off of the tumblr site. This is by finding a random post from a legitimate blogger, which could be about anything, and either deleting the entire content of the post and adding in some ridiculous comment like ‘For more fun follow this link’ with a hyperlink off of tumblr, or if its a photo that in any way is either fun/a meme/or a little nsfw, they keep that in place and just add their link like above. Scroll down their blog and literally every single post will be a reblog and have exactly the same comment on, getting you to click and take you off site.
What does this matter i hear you ask? Well, when it comes to reporting a post, it helps to confuse the tumblr bots/staff as to what’s being reported… the comment or the original post? This means that when a bunch of posts are reported, they are all coming from different originators, this will make tumblr staff’s life even harder, and legitimate blogs are at risk of someone hitting ‘deactivate blog’ in the admin settings, meaning YOU COULD LOOSE YOUR ENTIRE BLOG BECAUSE SOME ASSHOLE PORN BOT REBLOGGED FROM YOU.
So don’t ignore this kind of thing, if you see one of these stupid reblogs (the bots very rarely actually follow you anymore), BLOCK THEM RIGHT THERE AND THEN.
What I’ve been doing now is checking the notes of my posts and clicking on the porn blogs, like this fella… click on the dude at the top, report….
Then flag for spam and block:
You can do it on mobile, either clicking the pic of the note, or going to the reblog and reporting the blog itself.
DO NOT REPORT THE POSTS or the OP could get blocked instead of the bot!
Them: Binaries like man and woman are wrong, human existence is a lot more diverse than that! There is so much more to who we can be!
Me: YEEEEEEEEES!
Them: We need words for non-binary experiences, we need to describe how we experience unique forms of oppression for existing outside these boundaries.
Me: YEEEEEEEEES!
Them: We need to have clear fixed definitions and boundaries for this third space. You are either inside or outside. You either totally experience this oppression or you totally don’t. You are either one of Us or one of Them and that position is unchanging.
Me: Wait. no. back up. Back to the part where we were creating space for a more complex fluid understanding of the human experience?
Them: Also, let’s divide non-binary experiences into afab and amab as if your birth defines your whole lived experience forever. Let’s get non-binary markers on our passports. Let’s campaign for the state to use they pronouns for non-binary cops and soldiers. Let’s get companies to recognize non-binary consumers. Let’s gets non-binary people into political power …
It still rubs me the wrong way that RATM’s “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me, motherfucker” line became diluted and meme’d into like a joke about teenagers being mad at their mom when it’s literally a song about racist police brutality
Sometimes I’ll see people try to present RATM as try hard edgelords when they were communists who criticized American empire in their songs and publicly supported the Zapatistas as one of the biggest rock bands of all time.
This won’t be a surprise to anyone who follows this blog on the regular, but in Europe you are 5x more likely to die at the hand of a neo-Nazi terrorist than you are to die at the hands of a religious extremist of any kind.
This is actually worse than in the U.S., where neo-Nazi terror attacks kill twice as many people as “Muslim” terror attacks.
If anyone ever questions the threat posed by racist extremists or wonders why we do everything we can to stop them, this is the article to make them read & ponder.
Britain leads every other European country for the number of attacks or plots over the past 15 years that have been planned by individuals or self-starting cells, according to the report by four research institutes.
