Wanna do direct action but you can’t run, can’t fight, can’t deal with stress, can’t risk getting arrested? Not near a community to support? You can still do something.
Like write to prisoners.
Prisons try to disappear people, isolate them, crush them. Don’t let that happen.
Write to activists in prison, write to trans people in prison, write to isolated prisoners, write to prisoners who no one else thinks are worth writing to.
Write to prisoners.
Are there any programs or websites that help facilitate this which are based on the UK that you know of? Most of the info I’ve found tends to be US-based or just gov.uk general info about writing to someone you know in prison.
But given that I’m chronically ill or seems like a great way to actually do something and be an active part of change.
Great to hear that you’re interested!
The Anarchist Black Cross is a prisoner support network that has chapters in a lot of countries and cities. In the UK there are:
- London: https://network23.org/londonabc/
- Brighton: https://www.brightonabc.org.uk/
- Bristol: https://bristolabc.wordpress.com/
Other UK based groups include:
- SOAS Detainee Support: https://soasdetaineesupport.wordpress.com (focused on supporting people in migrant detention)
- The Bent Bars project: http://www.bentbarsproject.org/ (focused on LGBTIAQ+ prisoners)
- The Empty Cages Collective: http://www.prisonabolition.org/
- Prison Action London: http://www.prisonabolition.org/prison-action-london/
You can also find a prisoner to write to on your own via:
http://prisonersolidarity.net/data-explorer
Do check out some of the ‘do’s and don’t’ on one of these websites before you start, there are some basics like ‘don’t talk about illegal activities’ and ‘don’t stop writing without being honest to the person about the fact that you’re going to stop writing’ that are essential to know, and a lot of less important tips that just make it easier to start writing to someone you don’t know yet. Goodluck!
Shoutout to @freackthejester for pointing out Black and Pink (http://www.blackandpink.org), that can help you find LGBTIAQ+ prisoners in prison in the US, with chapters in:
- Dorchester:
members@blackandpink.org- Boise: boise@blackandpink.org – Chapter page
- Chicago- blackandpinkchicago@gmail.com – Chapter page
- Milwaukee – Milwaukee@blackandpink.org
- New Orleans- neworleans@blackandpink.org – Chapter page
- NYC- nyc@blackandpink.org – Chapter page
- Providence – providence@blackandpink.org
- San Francisco- flyingoverwalls@gmail.com
http://flyingoverwalls.wordpress.com/ – Chapter pageSomeone also requested resources for Australia so I’m going to add those to this reblog chain:
- Anarchist Black Cross Oceania https://www.facebook.com/abcoceania/
- Anarchist Black Cross Melbourne https://abcmelb.wordpress.com/
- Indigenous Social Justice Association Melbourne
Antifascist Action Brisbane has also hosted prisoner solidarity events (https://www.facebook.com/AntifascistBrisbane/)
And whenever there is no explicit prisoner-support organization, ask your local anarchists! Most anarchist groups do some prisoner support as well since supporting those who defy the state is basic anarchist praxis. This long list of Australia anarchist organizations probably includes groups that do some prisoner support: https://anarchy.org.au/directory/

“When you deny the right of workers to come together in collective bargaining, that’s extremism. When you tell a woman she cannot control her own body, that’s extremism. When you think a woman is a child and cannot buy a contraceptive, that is extremism. When you give tax breaks to billionaires and refuse to raise the minimum wage, that is extremism.”

Does anyone else feel compelled to sing this to the tune of That’s Amore??
When workers’ rights you deny and you make women die,
that’s extremismWhen children are cryin’ while billionaires drink more wine,
that’s extremism…I am not a songwriter.

I took an indefinite hiatus from reading r/namenerds when it was sincerely advanced, and upvoted into the 80s, that white Americans shouldn’t use Spanish names to avoid appropriating from Latinos, but white Europeans can use them because Spaniards, being white, cannot be appropriated from
this was like a month ago and I still think about it literally every day. what a fucking galaxy brain take
okay guys I found it (source)
The reason an aware, anti-racist American wouldn’t use a Spanish name, even if they want to end the oppression of Latinos, even if they love the culture and welcome it’s inclusion in the American tapestry, is that appropriating the “appealing” parts of an oppressed culture while people FROM that culture are discriminated against when they display those cultural pieces, is low-key racist. It’s an exercise of white privilege.
Our ancestors (mine too – I have a great aunt Juanita) could choose Spanish names because at that time, there weren’t enough Latinos in the country for them to be an oppressed culture. They were probably named after someone of Spain-Spanish decent, not Latino. It was a whole different ballgame:
I hope that someday we WILL view Latinos as “American” and it will no longer be problematic to use Spanish names, because that will mean that Latino oppression will be drastically improved.
Are they going to start an inquisition or what? A great number of names are shared between Spanish, Portugese, Italian, Latin and Ladino, plus there is a tradition among catholics to use Latin names, will they investigate what was the reason a couple decided to name their daughter Marianna* Mika** or what?
*coincidentally, a name popular in Slavic languages.
**a name in Japan… And Poland. This kind of nonsense is exactly why white californians keep naming their children Mahkayleighe.
Capitalism produces scarcity artificially where there is none.
There is enough food (in fact there’s currently massive amounts of “overproduced” grain being left to rot)
Even without changing the horribly designed production systems, there is no real shortage. People don’t starve, have no fresh water, have no houses to live in, etc. because there are not enough of these things. People don’t have access because capitalism denies them it.
There’s enough to share for everyone. It’s not a zero sum game for poor and oppressed peoples.
I known the argument that only GMOs can save us is untrue for the reasons above, but is overpopulation draining resources and killing the earth a lie promulgated by capitalists as a diversion as well? Would we be fine with this many people under a different economic/social system?
Yes, overpopulation is a capitalist/racist myth too. It originated in racist eugenics theory and ignores issues of distribution, infrastructure/technology, and disparate impact in favor of fearmongering about poor/brown people having too many babies.
This one pops up a lot, so I’m going to post some links on it here:
Here’s a website dedicated to debunking overpopulation. It’s 101 and simple, but might be a good intro point for some.
It’s impossible for developing countries to generally adopt Western style energy consumption development models on a large scale. And China, one of the larger developing countries whose government is a bit less under the thumb of Western imperialist powers, doesn’t intend to keep trying that either (instead investing in more renewable energy).
So, yes, it’s absolutely not the number of people that’s the main problem, but how resources are used and environmental management practices are done. If you were going to get rid of people to fix environmental problems, you would start with rich white Westerners, the opposite of who gets targeted by “overpopulation” panics.
I’m reblogging this post from last year, because I see so many opinions about the environment that repeat this nonsense.
It’s racist imperialist capitalist bullshit, and it leads to the exact opposite of real solutions.
@bramstoked you would rock something like this
How to Self Rescue in the Event you Fall Through Frozen Ice
With that music I was not expecting this to be a completely serious and informative video
You’re not over exaggerating. You’re not too sensitive. You’re not too much. If it hurts you it fucking hurts you. If it makes you angry, then it makes you angry. There’s nothing wrong with you for feeling.
Seizure First Aid.
Learn it. Share it. Know it. Use it.
100% correct medical information on tumblr for once; also consider calling 911 if you don’t know how often the person has seizures and ESPECIALLY if the seizure has lasted 5 minutes or more (which is why the watch is critical)
I have epilepsy so making sure the word is out on how to help people who do have seizures means a lot to me.
My mum’s epileptic, and I do most of this, but I was taught to keep her on her side by holding on to an item of clothing so she doesn’t roll over and choke on her tongue.
Also, epileptic people are usually disoriented when they come back to consciousness, and sometimes don’t know where they are, so it’s a good idea to explain where they are and that they’ve just had a seizure.
My late GF Dani had much seizures (she passed away from a bunch of seizures in a row what stopped her heart for too long). One thing for the post-seizure care – do NOT tell them anythings. Ask questions of their normal life – name, where they is, etc. Dani would often not knowed stuff for many minutes after – sometimes not even knowed who was talking at her. Telling her them things would maked it harder to know when she was back aware.
Ask questions – don’t give the answers. Is important to know when the person is aware again. If is more than about 15 minutes from end of visible seizure and they is still not able to answer right, let the EMT’s take em to hospital.
If nother seizure happens in less than 5 minutes – take em to hospital.
If 3 seizures in a row in less than an hour – take em to hospital. Is not wanting to be crying 10 years later like I is.
