in finland if something is far away or in an unknown place we can say that “se on huitsin nevadassa” (it’s in nevada) you can also politely tell that you’d wish someone to fuck off by wishing that they’d go to nevada

Teruyo is a restauranteur in Tokyo and activist from the Ainu culture, an indigenous community of northern Japan. She’s fighting for the survival of her mother tongue, which is spoken at varying levels of fluency by an unknown number of people. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Ainu speakers faced harsh persecution by the state, with legislation forbidding their language’s use in the public sphere, including education. As a consequence, only 10 native speakers remain.
However, while the Ainu language was pushed to the brink of extinction, the Ainu people have since launched a lively revivalist movement, especially among younger generations. As a result, L2 speakers are on the rise, and an Ainu-language magazine has been in circulation since 1997. Nonetheless, the movement receives little support from the Japanese government.
Today, there are more than 3,000 language communities facing a similarly precarious future, pushing back against centuries of repression and marginalization. We’re building tools to help language activists like Teruyo document, share, and sustain their ways of speaking.

I did this design two years ago and every year it’s gone viral without crediting me. There’s another Tumblr account here that has 300000 notes on it and the original poster didn’t credit me meaning I’ve lost out in a ton of potential sales. Had a mom come into work tonight while I was closing out the cosmetics counter at work. She looked a little lost, so I asked if she needed help, and she pointed to all of our perfume gift packages (holiday special whatnot) and asked if I could help her pick some out for her two kids.
I say sure, ask the age range, and go from there, asking if there’s anything she wants in particular (shopping for two tweens, one 11 and the other 12).
She hesitates and goes “just…something pretty. and feminine”
And I’m like “lol wanna make them feel like princesses, I see!”
And she just lowers her voice, like she’s scared I’m going to say something rude, and goes, “My 11 year old just started transitioning, and I want her to feel pretty.”
Just about made up for the rest of my shitty night. Kudos to you, mom. You’re doing good.
This is a bloody GOODmom. I wish more parents could be this supportive
