look at this lil jerk.

yeah, i mean, she’s cute and all

but what does she DO?

i mean, look at this lil slacker

is there anywhere she WON’T sleep?

can’t hide from the truth!!

get a job, ya lazy shit

see? it doesn’t make sense. she’s fuckin sweet and rad and why would anyone be mean to this lovely creature. when i want to hate myself, when i feel worthless because i can’t work or study or, frankly, do much of anything to make a ripple in this world, i imagine saying those things to theodosia.

she doesn’t do shit either. and she’s wonderful. and like yes i realize we are different species for whom there are slightly different expectations, but thinking about it this way has helped me a lot so i thought I’d share it, and show off how stupid cute my cat is in the bargain.

The first time you see how cashew nuts grow, you’re gonna think somebody’s posting a joke picture or a weird art installation.

ok but you say this….then don’t give us pictures

LOOK AT THESE RIDICULOUS THINGS

And it gets even weirder!

The shell of the nut itself:

contains a resin that’s so toxic just touching it causes burns to the skin, similar to poison ivy. Which is why cashews are never sold unshelled, because processing them requires safety measures like this:

How humanity ever figured out to eat this nut is beyond me.

In case you ever wondered why cashews are so expensive. Now you can wonder why they aren’t more expensive.

A little more info: Cashews: the nut you can’t buy in a shell

Someone picking and cooking them in Sri Lanka: Cooking Raw Cashew Nuts Curry in my Village by Grandma

I remembered seeing her handling them without gloves or anything, and yes it’s apparently like with the related poison ivy and sumac: some people are sensitive to the oils, and some just aren’t. Or, maybe Grandma is just very very tough 😅

Heat will destroy residue on the nuts, so commercially sold cashews are apparently heat treated. Guessing that cooking fresh ones like in the video would also do the trick.

So that train derailment up by Seattle is initially suspected to come of going too fast – around 80 miles an hour – around a curve, on the inaugural run of a new line designed to bypass slow sections and allow trains run at around 80 miles an hour

America: Not That Great At Fast Trains

Even the “fast” trains aren’t all that fast because they’re stopping every 5-10 miles and meandering all the while.

/The only difference between the NE Regional and the Acela is that the Acela makes 16 stops from Boston to DC, and the Regional makes a LOT more than that.

at some point you have to wonder how much of the ineptitude is deliberate

Paying People to Stay Home When They’re Sick Results in Less People Getting Sick

Here’s a revolutionary thought: Letting people stay home when they’re sick without docking their pay could help curb the spread of diseases. Specifically, a new paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the flu rate “decreases significantly” when employees are given paid sick days.

Water is wet

my mum has been saying this since i can remember.

And if people feel free to use those sick days when necessary, instead of being under pressure to show ‘dedication’ by working sick regardless.

Had a discussion about that not long ago, actually. With some people having noticed different expectations working in different countries.

Just a few Endler fry now!

All from those two fat and sassy girls who keep mugging for the camera, since they arrived in late August.

The boys have been getting separated out into another tank. Accounting for only 7 of the babies so far, but the second oldest batch of fry are only starting to differentiate themselves now. Some video of them to come.

_________

I know livebearers are really really good at producing more little fishies, but I still keep getting impressed 🙄

And they can keep it up for like 6 months after a single mating. Should hopefully be only a few more batches to go, as much as I do enjoy the babies. I may need to get another tank set up for some of the girls, as it is. And/or see if the fish store would like some back.

I was just trying to catch a couple of little boys out of there, and got one. I think. It’s in a breeding net holding cell in the bigger tank for now, to make sure I did scoop out the right one. Adult males are like 1" long, so you almost need a magnifying glass to be sure before the boys start coloring up.

One more awesome thing? They swarm whenever you even open the lid 🙄😬 And multiple other babies of all sizes always try to swim into the little medicine cup. (Good luck with a net if you don’t want half of them in it!)

There might be food, or something else exciting for tiny fish 😅
