no offence but let yourself be ugly!! you don’t have to fix your hair if you’re not going anywhere you don’t have to cover up ur spots or change out of your lounge pants to go buy milk like damn we really gotta let ourselves be comfortable without constantly apologising for just looking normal and it’s hard but i think we need to practice looking in the mirror and saying i look ugly af today and that’s okay!! tru self care is letting urself be ugly tbh
I love this version of self-love because it’s much more feasible for people who are self-conscious. Like it takes years of powerful reconditioning to convince yourself that your flaws, like stretch marks or acne or cellulitis, are attractive. It’s basically impossible for most people.
But learning to say “so what, I’m ugly, there’s more to life” not only overwrites this narrative that we have to feel attractive in some way (which is bs) but also reroutes your actual attention to just, living, instead of examining, evaluating, and judging your appearance
Imagine you spot a spider. You scream. Immediately, out of nowhere, I appear and slap you in the face.
Not hard. Not even enough to leave a mark. But enough that you definitely feel it.
Or how about this: you’re a kid, stuck at home with nothing to do. You’re bored. So you try to call your mum’s name to get her attention. Again, I appear and slap you.
Are you going to vocalise again? Probably not, sure. I’ll never say that bark control products – sonic, citronella, vibration – don’t stop barking. They do.
But they don’t address the underlying issue. You’re still scared of that spider (probably more so!). Or you’re still bored. Or stressed, sick, frustrated, whatever it might be. And so is your dog.
Bark control is a band-aid. There is no easy fix to a barking dog. If you want results, take that money and put it toward a force-free trainer instead. Chances are the answer lies in either desensitisation and/or environmental enrichment, but it varies per case.
Barking is your dog’s way of communicating that something is wrong in their environment. Merely “shutting them up” is not the appropriate response.
We are smart enough to know hot things should be hot.
We are sorry if you don’t
fun story about the reason they do that (at least in America)
once this lady spilled her McDonald’s coffee on herself and ended up getting like 3rd degree burns and since there was no warning on the cup she was able to claim she didn’t know it would be hot (or at least that hot) and won a lawsuit against McDonald’s for $1 million
That’s what the media smear campaign against her would have you believe, anyway. The truth of the matter is that the McDonald’s in question had previously been cited – on at least two separate occasions – for keeping their coffee so hot that it violated local occupational health and safety regulations. The lady didn’t win her lawsuit because American courts are stupid; she won it because the McDonald’s she bought that coffee from was actively and knowingly breaking the law with respect to the temperature of its coffee at the time of the incident.
(I mean, do you have any idea what a third-degree burn actually is? Third-degree burns involve “full thickness” tissue damage; we’re talking bone-deep, with possible destruction of tissue. Can you even imagine how hot that cup of coffee would have to have been to inflict that kind of damage in the few seconds it was in contact with her skin?)
Yeah I’m tired of people joking about either the “stupid” woman who didn’t know coffee was hot or the “greedy” woman making up bullshit to get money.
She was hideously injured by hideous irresponsibility, it was an absolutely legitimate lawsuit and the warning on the cups basically allows McDonalds to claim no responsibility even if it happens again. Every other company followed suit to cover their asses.
So they can still legally serve you something that could sear off the end of your tongue or permanently demolish the front of your gums and just give you a big fat middle finger in court. “The label SAID it would be HOT, STUPID.”
obligatory reblog for the great debunking of the usual ignorance spouted about this case
obligatory mention that the media smear campaign to twist teh facts on this case and get public opinion against the victim was deliberate and fueled by the right wing tort reform movement
it was seized upon to limit the rights of consumers to hold giant corporations accountable for wrongdoing
watch the documentary Hot Coffee, it lays out all of the facts and examines the response to this case and explains why everything you think you know about this case is bullshit, and explains why tort reform is bullshit in an entertaining and informative manner
The woman injured in Liebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurants was 79 years old at the time of her injuries, and suffered third-degree burns to the pelvic region (including her thighs, buttocks, and groin), which in combination with lesser burns in the surrounding regions caused damage to an area totaling a whopping 22% of her body’s surface. These injuries that required two years of intensive medical care, including multiple skin grafts; during her hospitalization, Stella Liebeck lost around 20% of her starting body weight.
She was uninsured and sued McDonald’s Restaurants for the cost of her past and projected future medical care, an estimated $20,000. The corporation offered a settlement of $800, a number so obviously ridiculous that I’m not even going to dignify it with any further explanation.
The settlement number most often quoted is not the amount that the corporation actually paid; the jury in the first trial suggested a payment equal to a day or two of coffee revenues for McDonald’s, which at the time totaled more than $1 million per diem. The judge reduced the required payout to around $640,000 in both compensatory and punitive damages, and the case was later settled out of court for less than $600,000.
Keep in mind that at the time, McDonald’s already had over 700 cases of complaints about coffee-related burns on file, but continued to sell coffee heated to nearly 200 degrees Fahrenheit (around 90 degrees Celsius) as a means of boosting sales (their selling point was that one could buy the coffee, drive to a second location such as work or home, and still have a piping hot beverage). This in spite of the fact that most restaurants serve coffee between 140 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit (60 to 71 degrees Celsius), and many coffee experts agree that such high temperatures are desirable only during the brewing process itself.
The Liebeck case was absolutely not an example of litigation-happy Americans expecting corporations to cover their asses for their own stupidity, but we seem determined to remember it that way. It’s an issue of liability, and the allowable lengths of capitalism, and even of the way in which our society is incredibly dangerous for and punitive towards the uninsured, but it was not and is not a frivolous suit. Please check your assumptions and do your research before you turn a burn victim’s suffering into a throwaway punchline.
Always reblog. The deliberate misinformation/corporate propaganda about this case is misogynist and ageist as FUCK.
Liebeck v. McDonald’s made companies quake in their boots, which is why there was a mad dash for ‘tort reform’ afterwards. Interest groups paid by company dollars lionized against the made up threat of frivolous lawsuits, when in reality the public is actually pretty good at not suing unless the offense is grievous enough. This was a calculated attack to weaken consumer laws. If your state now has laws capping damages, you can thank interest groups funded by companies scared that they could be sued for faulty products.
This article is a must to send to boomer parents who don’t get it (my dad!) but it also helps put in perspective what exactly is lost when employers misclassify their workers and transition workers to contracting status, which is a huge chunk of what’s devastating us at the national/international level; what the article calls a “chop shop” approach to profits. I think scorched earth also applies: devastating the world for profits that won’t give them anything in the real long term.
Not sure if it’s still this way, but an employer I worked for 10 years ago switched us all to contract status and stopped paying any employee taxes. We got 1099s. My taxes that year were the worst I’ve paid in my life.
Yep that’s one of the perks of doing this for employers. Not only do they stop paying an hourly wage and having to worry about benefits and workers comp, they don’t have to cover their part of payroll tax.
It’s 100% a scam to allow them to make more off us with less responsibility toward their workforce:
This is also a very common trick in Europe right now though unions have in some places been able to stop it using strikes or court cases. The fight continues.
Even local government and nonprofits do this in my area. I remember my girlfriend arguing with a DCF case worker that a “self employed” contractor that only works for one organization for $200 a month should still qualify for Medicaid.
The details are actually kind of interesting. The linked Wikipedia article doesn’t include that story anymore, but from another link someone posted:
The older method of outside frosting was not very popular, as it left lamps with a rough outside surface that was prone to breakage, collecting dust and giving off less light. The newer method of inside frosting developed by Marvin Pipkin resulted in an interior surface with tiny smooth dimples that enabled the bulb to diffuse its light but also retain its strength and hence would not break as easily as the older exterior frosted bulbs did. The newer inside frosted light bulbs also gave off less glare and a softer glow than did the clear bulbs and were easy to clean.
Roy Moore Spokesman Ted Crockett: Muslims can’t serve because you have to swear in on a Bible. Jake Tapper: There’s no law that says you have to swear in on a Bible. I saw this live. I was stunned
Is that true !?! You can swear on the quran for the inauguration to become the president of the United States ?! Guess I have some homework
Yes, because America is not a Christian nation. It was never supposed to have a state religion. As long as you’re a United States citizen and you meet the age and service requirements for President of the United States, you have every right to run.
UPDATE on HOMEWORK:
This what I found( cut and pasted ):
“Theodore Roosevelt did not use a Bible when taking the oath in 1901. Both John Quincy Adams and Franklin Pierce swore on a book of law, with the intention that they were swearingon the constitution. Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in on a Roman Catholic missal on Air Force One”
I had no idea, I like the swearing on the book of law. Like @thunder-the-great said, we aren’t supposed to have a state religion.
The Constitution specifically forbids any religious test to hold office. You can swear on anything or nothing at all. You don’t even have to swear, the Constitution specifically says you can affirm.
Lan Diep of the San Jose city council swore on Captain America’s shield. You can literally swear on anything or nothing.
Back in a more serious direction, I was in elementary school in the early-mid ‘80s, when the Religious Right started pushing so hard to grab power in the US. We had one teacher who kept emphasizing the point that freedom of religion is such an important thing–and that this includes freedom FROM religion.
I doubt any of us kids really appreciated the context or his message at the time, but down the road I really can. And it’s a shame this has gotten to be so much less popular and common a message, as the Overton window has continued to shift.
When that message is if anything increasingly important in the current political climate, and it seems like news to too many people.
(I appreciate Mr. Mills and his apparent rambling a lot more over the years in general, tbh. Some information that was so much more important than most of the official curriculum. He was also one of the dedicated older Black educators who kept teaching under seriously demoted circumstances after desegregation, which is another ugly story entirely. Some of the best teachers I had fell in that category, and they’re pretty much all gone by now.)
hey so my name is jake!! i’m a blasian trans gay dude and a while back i was diagnosed with hashimoto’s thyroiditis (an autoimmune disease that makes my body attack my thyroid for presumably no reason). so on december 15th, i had the surgery to get rid of my left thyroid lobe. during surgery, they found that my left lobe had 3-5 cancerous tumors and they removed my whole thyroid instead of just half. (the pics above are all the proof i have atm due to the fact that we haven’t gotten the paperwork back from the hospital)
so, long story short i still have cancer in my system, which is why i need to go through radiation therapy for it. due to the fact that my medicine (levothyroxine) can promote cancerous cells to spread & duplicate faster whencombined with the radiation therapy (don’t ask me how i don’t know) my surgeon told me that i should stay off of my medication so that my cancer doesn’t spread to my lymph nodes… and the lymph node cancer 5-year survival rate is only about 25%… which is really fucking scary
but the thing is: i can only survive 21 days without a thyroid and the horomones the thyroid gives, and my surgery happened 5 days ago.
i really cannot afford therapy, we can barely afford food rn. the surgery & numerous doctors visits that got me here took $13k+ from us, and radiation therapy will take at least another thousand from us and we really can’t do that. so unless i raise at least another 2k in the next few weeks, i’ll either die or be forced to deal with more cancer in my system which will inevitably kill me.
tl;dr: i have 16 days to raise $2k+ for post-cancer radiation therapy or i might actually die.
u dont understand how disappointed i am that this dog didnt appear on my dash this year and how hard i tried to find a post that included both pictures
