Doctors often tell both women who do and don’t have mental health conditions that their physical symptoms are caused by depression or anxiety. If you know in your gut that your physical symptoms aren’t caused by a mental health condition (even if you do have one), don’t let your doctor convince you to stop pursuing a diagnosis. 

Flashback to when the head of Endocrinology at a major medical group refused to test my blood sugar and instead prescribed me Prozac. (No, I did not fill the prescription.)

During the six month process of trying to get tested for Reactive Hypoglycemia, I was repeatedly told by a parade of doctors that 1) it doesn’t exist (it does) 2) I was depressed (I wasn’t) 3) I was having trouble sleeping (hahahahahaha) and 4) it was hormonal (nope).

Spoiler Alert: It was Reactive Hypoglycemia. When I finally convinced a doctor to test me for Reactive Hypoglycemia, the lab called me in a dead panic an hour after I got home because my blood sugar was so low they were afraid I’d suffer permanent brain damage. I was only a few points above the point where you fall into a coma.

The moral of the story is 1) the majority of doctors are asses and 2) you absolutely 100% have got to advocate for yourself. Keep hiring and firing doctors until you find someone who takes you seriously. Your life may depend on it.

God forbid you take an honest job $7,000 above Michigan’s average cost of living line.

Bitch, I was making $15 an hour, post tax, doing exactly that, the fuck is wrong with it? (Other than it was physically exhausting.)

We need to help America, as a whole, understand that college is not, and should not be he only option, and that there is NO SHAME in trade school or even getting a career right out of high school.

I, personally, know plumbers making $80,000+ a year. Better than most 4 year degree workers.

We need plumbers, janitors, truck-drivers, garbage collectors, machinists, to keep this nation running smoothly. And they deserve respect for what they do.
