I’ve got a delightful self identified “Communist Tory” (literally what?! what kind of mental back-fucking-flippery are you performing right now) in my IM’s telling me there is absolutely no history of “Scotch” being used as a pejorative against Scottish people in the history of ever and I am factually wrong because there is no evidence at all so I should apologize for being wrong.
About my own culture. Which I grew up in. And have a degree in.
Amazing.
Okay now I know I’m just being trolled because apparently William Wallace is, and I quote, “a cultural tooth fairy to give you something to believe in.”
And to be honest that is a fucking fantastic mental image. Just fucking William Wallace manifesting out of the
æther like a seven foot giant, knocks your fucking pan in and walks off with your teeth to sell them on for a wee dram. Iconic.
Also hey did you guys know the entire Wars of Scottish Independence is a myth? I tell you, you learn something new every day on this website.
Like the fact that a person can in fact survive even while suffering from the unfortunate affliction of having their heid rammed so far up their arse they can see daylight. Astounding.
A police officer will not face charges over the death of Rashan Charles, a young black man who died after a police pursuit in London, the Crown Prosecution Service has announced.
A common assault charge had been considered against the Metropolitan policeofficer in connection with the 20-year-old’s death on 22 July 2017 after he was apprehended by police in Dalston, east London.
Despite two postmortems and a series of toxicology tests, the exact cause of Charles’s death remains unknown, with a coroner’s inquest not scheduled until 4 June this year due to a continuing investigation into the officer by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
A CPS spokeswoman said on Sunday: “Following the death of Rashan Charles in July 2017, the Independent Office for Police Conduct referred a file of evidence in relation to one Metropolitan police officer for a possible charge of common assault.
“The CPS has considered the matter and decided the evidential test for a prosecution for common assault is not met. We will therefore not be taking any further action regarding this offence.”
A preliminary IPCC investigation last year found that after Charles had been detained attempts were made to remove an object from his mouth or throat. It was later revealed that a package extracted from his body contained a mixture of caffeine and paracetamol.
The officer who apprehended Charles is under investigation by the IPCC for gross misconduct for the restraint and his handling of the subsequent medical emergency, which could result in dismissal from the Met.
The police complaints body is expected to provide an update on its investigation this week.
The Met said it would not comment on the CPS decision.
Charles’s death sparked violent street protests in east London, with threats made against police and demonstrators throwing fireworks and bottles at riot officers.
At a pre-inquest review in November, all officers involved in the death were granted anonymity, despite the coroner, Mary Hassell, rejecting claims there was a “direct threat to officers’ lives”.
Bullshit. But whose surprised? They’ve waited til it’s calmed down to inform us nothing will be done about it.
Those videos looking at 18th century English women’s clothing–and my continuing horror at the idea of regularly having to wear that many layers including stays to do any kind of work–reminded me of one period journal that just about choked me to death laughing when I ran across it several years ago.
It’s not just me imagining that pretty much all my folks were naked savages by certain standards, by that point.
(As an Anglican missionary, dealing with people who were mostly not English and not at all interested in the still-official colonial Church of England.)
Here I found a vast Body of People assembled—Such a Medley! such a mixed Multitude of all Classes and Complexions I never saw…I was a Great Curiosity to them—And they were as great Oddities to me. After Service they went to Revelling Drinking Singing Dancing and Whoring—and most of the Company were drunk before I quitted the Spot—They were as rude in their Manners as the Common Savages, and hardly a degree removed from them. Their Dresses almost as loose and Naked as the Indians, and differing in Nothing save Complexion—I could not conceive from whence this vast Body could swarm—But this Country contains ten times the Number of Persons beyond my Apprehension.
Swarming aroud busily engaged in Revelling Drinking Singing Dancing and Whoring, while next to naked. Sounds like quite an experience for Charles!
Withal there is such a Republican Spirit still left, so much of the Old Leaven of Lord Shaftsbury and other the 1st principal Settlers still remains, that they seem not at all disposed to promote the Interest of the Church of England—Hence it is that above 30,000£ Sterling have lately been expended to bring over 5 or 6000 Ignorant, mean, worthless, beggarly Irish Presbyterians, the Scum of the Earth, and Refuse of Mankind, and this, solely to ballance the Emigrations of People from Virginia, who are all of the Established Church.
Tell us what you really think, Charles! (OK, I was intending to stick to the horrible nakedness. But that describes a decent chunk of the scum he was trying to convert. Also, the Virginia he mentions didn’t include the “frontier”. Filled with the exact same refuse of Mankind.)
Anyway, back to the horrible nakedness.
It would be (as I once observ’d before) a Great Novelty to a Londoner to see one of these Congregations—The Men with only I a thin Shirt and pair of Breeches or Trousers on—barelegged and barefooted—The Women bareheaded, barelegged and barefoot with only a thin Shift and under Petticoat—Yet I cannot break [them?] of this—for the heat of the Weather admits not of any [but] thin Cloathing—I can hardly bear the Weight of my Whig and Gown, during Service. The Young Women have a most uncommon Practise, which I cannot break them off. They draw their Shift as tight as possible to the Body, and pin it close, to shew the roundness of their Breasts, and slender Waists (for they are generally finely shaped) and draw their Petticoat close to their Hips to shew the fineness of their Limbs—so that they might as well be in Puri Naturalibus—Indeed Nakedness is not censurable or indecent here, and they expose themselves often quite Naked, without Ceremony—Rubbing themselves and their Hair with Bears Oil and tying it up behind in a Bunch like the Indians—being hardly one degree removed from them—In few Years, I hope to bring about a Reformation, as I already have done in several Parts of the Country.
That seems to have worked out for him about as well as one might expect.
And of course old Charles wasn’t looking at those fine limbs at all, as he sweltered in his proper wig and gown. Never mind the probable outrage at just how often that one degree of separation broke down. (With all the Revelling and Whoring! And not so sexualized nakedness going on, apparently! 😨)
I can only imagine that the man would have gone down almost as big a treat dealing with working Londoners up close.
But, definitely some pretty big differences in historical dress norms, depending on where and who you were.
You are always entitled to your feelings, however, I think that you’re missing some pieces of the puzzle and attributing some meaning to it (”fun pop symbol”) that it simply doesn’t have in the United States – at least, not any part of the communities I’ve been a part of.
Let’s walk through some of the pieces that I think you’re missing, and how those things expressly make it clear that it is not a ‘fun pop symbol’, and never has been, not to us.
I’m going to put this all behind a cut, because this is going to delve into some painful history. Content warnings have been tagged.
I’ve seen these posts saying, in the words of one of them, “If your job requires you to go against your religious beliefs then perhaps it is time to change careers?” in reference to healthcare workers and government employees who want to deny services to lgbt ppl or others whom they condemn, and i just feel like those posts don’t attempt to understand internal logics at all
like, fundamentalist christian doctors don’t deny trans people medical care because they believe that somebody should provide the care but they just don’t want to be the one to do it. they deny the care because they don’t believe the person should receive care. Their refusal to provide care isn’t just “oops you’re in the wrong field,” as if they were a person with a peanut allergy working in a peanut factory. It is an intentional and calculated part of why they are in the field in the first place — to extend religious control and condemnation to the medical realm.
the pediatrician who spent an entire consultation telling one of my friends at 16 or 17 that he would go to hell if he kept choosing to be gay wasn’t just “not cut out for the job,” he was specifically in that job in order to do that particular thing. Kim Davis didn’t deny the gay couple a marriage license because she couldn’t personally do it, she denied them a marriage license because she thought that people like them should not get marriage licenses and that a clerk should deny them and by god she was going to be that clerk
Saying “if you can’t provide services then why are you in that job!!!” to fundamentalist christians almost always misses the point — that they are in that job specifically so they can selectively deny service
Allow me to rephrase on behalf of everyone, then: “If your job requires you do go against your religious beliefs, and you won’t, you should be expunged from it because you are a garbage person. But not the career, because garbage people work hard and don’t have much opportunity to exercise discrimination. I mean a person metaphorically made of garbage.”

You all like and remember this video of a well-off woman getting dressed, and a few days ago, the same creative team (Crows Eye production) now brings us the working woman version. I’m sure you’ll all love it!
“You walk at home? Do you even need your wheelchair?”
Yes, because walking in my own house is different than walking class to class at school. I don’t carry a heavy backpack at home. I’m not on a tight schedule at home. I can sit on the ground at home. I can ask my parents or siblings to help me at home. I can crawl on my hands and knees at home. I can lie in the middle of the hallway at home. I can sit on counters and tables at home. I can bear a lot of pain at home. I can show that pain at home. I can collapse in the middle of crawling up the staircase at home.
Don’t tell me or anyone else where or when they need to use their mobility device
